If you’re in the market for a new house and have decided to build from scratch, choosing experienced and qualified home builders is just as important as planning the house itself. Your goal should be to choose a construction provider that delivers high-quality work while still keeping prices affordable. The builder should also be flexible about the features and facets that are to be part of your house. When you choose a custom-built house, a big part of the appeal is getting to choose exactly how it looks, down to each detail, and the contractor should be willing to work with you on that.

A good starting point is to make a list of home builders in your area. You can solicit recommendations from family, friends, and neighbors. If you have a lot in mind, you could ask the homeowner’s association which home builders other people in the neighborhood used to construct their own houses. Your real estate agent may also be able to offer some suggestions, especially if their work involves selling custom-built houses.

Once you have a list prepared, you should add pertinent information to it. Reputation, price range, and construction options are all important. Price range should probably be your starting point, because it can be devastating to find a contracting company that is exactly what you’re looking for only to discover that what they charge exceeds your budget. Price range is generally easy to discern, but figuring out a company’s reputation can take a bit more effort. If you got the recommendation from someone, ask them about their experience. Otherwise, there are plenty of websites that provide customer reviews for many different service providers, including construction companies.

The next step is to ask the home builders on your list for the addresses or subdivisions of some of their more recently built houses. You can then drive by on a weekend morning and see the buildings in person. If the owner is outside working on his yard or running errands, he or she may even be willing to give you some information about his or her experience with the company. This may seem intrusive, but building a house is a big project and people understand that it’s important to choose the right company for the job.
